“Enjoy Your Mugging” in New York City

As I walked into Central Park yesterday with my girlfriend, a horse-drawn carriage driver tried to offer me a ride for $120. Figuring that it was a pretty nice day and we wanted spend our money elsewhere, I said “No, thanks.” and kept walking.

Much to our surprise, the carriage driver yelled, “Enjoy your mugging.”

As a Minnesotan, who is used to “Minnesota nice,” I was caught off guard. What must this carriage driver thinking?

He works in an industry driven by tourists. It’s not like other tourists didn’t hear him, or hear my story.

In the new media world we live in, it doesn’t make any sense to treat a non-customer poorly. Non-customers can talk to other potential customers. Non-customers write blogs, they write reviews, and they can talk to mass audiences with a few simple keystrokes.

Below is a picture of me in Times Square, as well as a picture taken just hours after the Times Square bombing.

’07 Review, ‘08 Outlook and the Knowledge Advantage

For me, 2007 was a year for taking chances in my life and career. I took a new job with an Internet start-up and decided to move in with my girlfriend.

Others warned me about the difficulties and problems that could arise from making these decisions. And while I admit, a few things they warned me about, actually happened. I truly have no regrets. These were all my own decisions, from which I have only strengthened myself.

Helping me get through it all was an old inspirational phrase I heard while playing football at North Dakota State University.

Great Attitude + Great Effort = Great Results

While that mikght seem a little simplistic, effort and attitude are a few things we can control. Especially in business, we can really control the amount of effort we put into learning new things.

To Mark Cuban this means reading and searching out new information for up to three hours a day. And as I look forward to new challenges in 2008, my only resolution is to keep up the effort and learn as much as I can.
