Internet and the Evolving Music Industry

The music industry is changing thanks to sharing on the Internet. Panic! At the Disco is the perfect example of a band that recognizes they just have to work a little harder and adapt with the times.

In 2006, the band sold 1.6 million copies of their album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out, meaning they probably made around $2.5 million dollars from album sales along. However, they were still able to rake in an additional $6 million from performances.

That’s why for their upcoming album the group has decided to create songs that are concert friendly.

The Radiohead Experiment
Earlier this year, Radiohead allowed fans to pay whatever they wanted to download their latest album In Rainbows.

According to the Associated Press, a study done by a customer research firm found that 62% of fans who downloaded Radiohead’s new album actually decided to pay nothing. The other 38% only paid an average of $6.

It doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, but if you consider that they will probably make the majority of their money from concert ticket sales - why not do anything you can to expand your fan base and sell more concert tickets.

It’s not like artists can’t make good money because of the Internet. They might have to just work a little harder.
