Ning or KickApps? Part II

Six months after creating a social network on Ning, I finally completed creating a social network using KickApps. (Please note that the site on which I created my Kickapps powered social network is still in the conceptual stage of development.)

Comparing Ning & KickApps
Having now completed creating a social network on both, I think it is a bit unfair to directly compare the two. Both are amazing products that serve two slightly different niches within the white labeled social networking market.

As I see it, if you want to create a social network, but are starting from scratch with very little design skills, then Ning is where you should start. I have to give Ning its props for its simplicity. However that is also its greatest downfall, which opens up the door for KickApps.

When to Use KickApps
If you already have an existing site, but want to add social networking features, then KickApps is the way to go. You can use your existing CSS style sheets and tweek them by adding parts of the KickApps style sheet and there you have it – a fully featured social network that lives within your current site.

I should mention though that I think KickApps really improved their ability to create a social network from scratch with the release of their newest version in January.

Jaffe in Minnesota Presents Social Media Marketing

On whim yesterday, I decided to attend a monthly Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association (MIMA) gathering. The event included a presentation by blogger and interactive marketing guru, Joseph Jaffe. Jaffe’s presentation focused on the future of advertising and how to engage with consumers on the social media platform.

Join the ConversationI found the entire presentation to be very interesting. He gave numerous examples of things that we as marketers, advertisers and public relations professionals could do to engage with consumers. And while Jaffe had some fantastic lists, a couple great case studies and about a million wonderful key messages, I thought his key message to us was to not to miss the obvious opportunities to embrace our consumers online and invest time in building authentic relationships.

Jaffe obviously had much more to talk about, but I do not have time to regurgitate it all. For that you’ll have to pick up a copy of his new book, “Join the Conversation.”  Thank you to Internet Broadcasting, Carmichael Lynch, Hello Viking, and MIMA for giving everyone in attendance a free copy of Jaffe’s new book.

Instant Messaging Service: Next Step in Social Network Evolution

Facebook LogoFeatures and functionality on social networks are evolving right before our eyes. Just a few days ago, AOL purchased Bebo. The purchase was made to combine AOL’s instant messaging service (AIM) with the social networking services of Bebo.

It seems like a nice marriage. I remember when I began college in 2001, everyone I knew in the dorms has AIM. I imagine that what AIM was to my friends and I, what Facebook is to today’s crop of college students.

And interestingly enough Michael Arrington of TechCrunch announced that Facebook will be adding instant messaging sometime next week; Pretty much nullifying the exciting news that AOL purchased Bebo.

MySpace also has an instant messaging service through Skype. For a while they had an instant messaging service created by MySpace developers, that if I remember correctly was full of bugs and never took off.

I’ll be watching to see how instant messaging effects Bebo, Facebook and other social networks.
